Information

The Adult and Community Learning (ACL) team is based in the City Library and Arts Centre, Fawcett Street, Sunderland.

They work with a number of learning providers to offer a wide range of learning activities. Courses are also offered through each of the 6 area Lifelong Learning Forums.

Adult and Community Learning receives funding from the Learning and Skills Council. This funding is used to contract with voluntary and community organisations, schools, City of Sunderland College and the University of Sunderland, to deliver non-accredited learning. Much of this is designed to offer a first step back into learning for adults.

A key aim of Adult and Community Learning is to increase participation in learning and offer progression routes for learners.

Broker North East Support for Partner Organisations

If you are involved in working with clients with health problems who are claiming associated sickness related benefits, we at Broker North East understand, perhaps better than anyone, the priorities and pressures attached to the changing labour market. With limits on training through Work Based Learning for Adults and the loss of Action Teams it makes it increasingly difficult to meet customer aspirations.

That’s why, as your partner, we want to share with you all our experience; our extensive network of contacts; knowledge and financial resources to secure the best possible financial outcome for your customers to enable them to move successfully into sustainable employment. This year we have managed to secure additional funding which allows us both the opportunity to overcome barriers that customers face in a significant way.

Here are some of the practical and down to earth ways in which we can help:

· Tools and equipment
· Advice on and funding for relevant Training courses
· Supporting clients into Self Employment with training, stock purchase and grants
· Benefit run on until customer receives first pay
· After care service 24/7 on registration, provided by Care First, to keep everything running smoothly, before and after a job has been found.
· Protected benefits to ensure no customer is disadvantaged
· Permitted Work specialists.
· Prescription charges paid on returning to work if not eligible for entitlement through Working Tax Credit

Boredom and a feeling of isolation are the biggest barriers for anyone who is deaf – especially if that deaf person is a very young child, but this group are now helping to break down those barriers, our motto is “you don’t have to be frightened to go out”. For many families it is particularly difficult at holiday times, where they can feel shut up behind closed doors, so we always try to give them something to look forward to.

The group gives support to deaf children from birth to 16 and their families.  They organise activities during the school holidays and on a weekly basis to help build children's confidence and self esteem.
