Information

You may be aware of a recent publication produced by Houghton Churches Together, which received support from Barnardo’s and City of Sunderland Community Chest.

The purpose of the Community Survey was to research community provision and needs in the area identified as Houghton le Spring. The results of the survey indicated, although there is excellent provision in the area, there are several groups for whom provision is scarce and whose needs are not being met locally.

The Community Survey report makes proposals to improve provision for all children and young people in the Houghton le Spring area by establishing a working party consisting of children and young people.

The working party meet, as and when required, the action proposed from a meeting in September is outlined below:-

  • Coalfield Forum to contact Houghton Kepier Student Council and feedback findings into November’s meeting.
  • Coalfield Forum to contact M Dodds and seek advice regarding environmental project at Houghton Sports Complex, if positive feedback is received Nicol will then seek further advice from Coalfield Sport and Leisure Forum and Coalfield Youth Forum.
  • Circulate and notify people of the next meeting to encourage attendance.
  • Date and time of next meeting – 2 November 2004 at Houghton Methodist Church commencing at 6.00pm.

HOPE delivers social activities which are caring, creative and fun for older people in the coalfield community.

It was formally opened up by the Right Worshipfulness the Mayor Cllr Jim Scott, followed by speeches from Rev Don Wass, Bill Calvert and Bill Barron.

Approximately 45 elderly residents attended the event, who visited stalls and shared a non alcoholic cocktail. After the display’s and information stalls the potential members where ushered into the dining area where an unbelievable feast awaited them. Everyone was treated like royalty and made to feel valued.

After food and drinks the entertainment started, with a picture quiz and then birthdays were celebrated with a sing song and gifts. When the event closed over 28 people had decided to become members of the groups and commented on how well the event had flowed and how they will be attending the following week.

Information

Coal has been an integral part of the Lambton area and is one of the major reasons for the regions success. Mining has taken place in the area since the 1600's and numerous collieries employing thousands of people operated in and around the site, culminating in the Lambton "D" and the Cokeworks,, which has now closed.

We believe that this rich heritage should be recognised with the incorporation of a suitable memorial on the developed site, which will stand as a tribute to the industry and the people who were employed in it.

There are many examples of similar memorials and we do not think Lambton should miss out on recognising the role of its forbears and the part they have played.

As the group has successfully renewed the Lambton Banner, we think it would be a fitting climax to our endeavours and a tribute to the mining community. we would hope to involve the local people and the schoolchildren in the planning of what ever is decided, as we have found that the children in particular are very enthusiastic to learn about their mining forbears and a memorial garden would help them to identify with this important part of history.

We have the wholehearted support of the Durham N.U.M and we have made tentative inquiries to local councillors, who seem very enthusiastic with the idea.

Our intentions are to have a stone sculpture of a miner, a plaque giving the history of the Colliery and Cokeworks and seating around the area, one of which we ourselves will donate and we have approached the local Working Men's Clubs who would be pleased to donate another two in memory of the members who were former employees at both these sites.
