Information

The Square Route Group formed in August 2001 with the purpose of raising funds to improve the neglected green space in our village of New Herrington. Working with the Countryside Agency and the City of Sunderland, we are creating a ‘Doorstep Green’ to provide a pleasant and accessible open area for the whole community to enjoy. Alongside this we are to create a ‘Homezone’ with the lanes adjoining the Green – a Homezone is an extension of the Green, creating additional outdoor living space, priority is given to pedestrians, and traffic allowed to pass at very low speeds, thereby reclaiming the streets for the community as well as traffic. Both these schemes not only enable safe and healthy outdoor play for children, but also provide an outdoor community area for everyone to use and enjoy. The area will be better lit, encouraging people to use the area more, reducing crime and the fear of crime. These improvements will not only visually enhance the appearance of the area, but combined with the additional services the Group provide, will lift morale and strengthen relationships within the community. This is the first side-by-side Doorstep Green and Homezone in the North East of England, and the first Homezone within the City of Sunderland.

The Square Route Group also provides community activities and events, and is the only community group in our village providing these services. Work within the community is extensive and is carried out purely by volunteers. Activities include an annual Fun Day/Carnival – held on the Green, family discos, outings and during the last Summer holidays we had weekly outdoor activity trips for local children including ghyll scrambling, canoeing etc. for the younger children we had community artists on a weekly basis doing hands-on projects with the children.

A Children’s’ Forum has also been set up – allowing the children to make decisions about plans for improving their environment and also to plan the annual Fun days and other activities.

The total cost of the environmental improvement scheme is in excess of £425,000 – these funds have been raised in less than a year, with a variety of funders and funding packages. Our work has been strongly supported by the City of Sunderland, ward members and the Coalfield Area Committee. Work is due to commence in November 2004.

Additional investment into New Herrington provided by the Group in the way of funding and provision of community activities over the last two years is in the region of £100,000.

Without the Group none of this could have happened.
