Houghton Wheeled Skate Park

skateSunderland City Council received a petition from 203 young people requesting wheeled sports facilities in the Houghton-le-Spring area. As part of the Sunderland Play and Urban Games Strategy young people must be at the heart of all our developments.

There is a lack of Wheeled Skate Parks within the area. Many youngsters cannot access these facilities because of the distance they have to travel. All young people in the Coalfields area would benefit from a purpose built Wheeled Sports Facility.

Various meeting have been held with children and their parents to determine the type of Skate Park they would require and a suitable location this being at on the disused tennis courts behind Houghton Sports Complex. Sunderland City Council has worked closely with the young people throughout the project consulting with them on location and Skate Park designs. Public consultation has also been carried out with local residents to ensure that they are happy with this new facility.

The total cost of the project is around £80,000. Groundwork North East submitted an application form for £50,000 to Barclays Spaces for Sports on behalf of Sunderland City Council. This application was successful and we have been awarded the sum of £50,000. Therefore we are now looking to source additional funding, to enable our design aspirations to be met.

Wearsidefirst helping Farepak Customers

wearside firstPeople living or working in Sunderland who are out of pocket this Christmas through the collapse of the Farepak Hamper Company are urged to contact Wearside First Credit Union.

Wearsidefirst, a not-for-profit organisation offering savings and low cost loan facilities to anyone living or working in Sunderland, may be able to assist with affordable low cost loans to help cover the cost of Christmas.

Kerry Graham the Development Manager from Wearsidefirst said “Farepak Hamper customers must be worrying how they will cover the cost of Christmas and we hope that we can help in this difficult time”.

Wearsidefirst have allowed many people to spread the cost of Christmas through their savings clubs and with our new Argos Acard, members receive an extra 5% when they spend at Argos.

“Many people may have had bad experiences with Christmas savings clubs, therefore I would like to stress that money saved in a Credit Union is protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, therefore your money is safe” said Kerry Graham.

If you would like further information on Wearsidefirst or are a Farepak Hamper Customer and would like to discuss a low cost loan then please contact us on 0191 514 7491 or visit or Head office in Waterloo Place, Sunderland.
